HISTORY
The Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on Saturday, January 12, 1980 at the Holiday Inn in Battle Creek, Michigan. Ms. Wilhelmina Goff, Midwest Regional Director was present. We are also the first African American Pan Hellenic sorority to be established in Battle Creek. The membership of Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter has grown and remains committed to serving our community.

Our desire is to leave a legacy in the Battle Creek community of charity, the fundamentals of good character, sharing, intellectual achievement, giving back to others, and ensuring respect for the human rights of all.

We are always eager to welcome new Sorors to the area to be a part of our Chapter.

The Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter uses our many skills and talents to impact the lives of residents through a variety of community services. In keeping with our Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, the following is a partial list of programs and services we provide in our community:

  • Each year, we conduct projects designed to address our community's concerns about excellence in education. These projects offer mentoring, educational activities and service learning opportunities to participants. Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter currently conducts the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy at Lakeview Middle School.

  • Scholarship Program - We annually sponsor a scholarship through the Battle Creek Community Foundation to high school graduates that will assist them in financing their pursuit of higher education.

  • Simple Acts of Kindness - Each Thanksgiving, we prepare baskets for families in need. During Christmas, hats, gloves, socks and toys are collected and sent to Charitable Union. We also host an Activities Day with seniors at local nursing homes annually.

  • Lunch with Santa - this annual program consists of children enjoying storytelling, singing Christmas carols, holiday lunch, taking photos with an African American Santa and a bag of treats to take home. Several members donate funds to ensure that children in need can attend.

  • Project Cherish - The Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter has also participated in "Project Cherish", a national preservation and beautification program of African American landmarks, monuments and historic sites spearheaded by the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. The Battle Creek Alumnae Chapter was one of 13 pioneer chapters to launch the nationwide clean-up and beautification project of an African American historic place- the Sojourner Truth Gravesite at Oak Hill Cemetery (May 1992). A special ceremony was held in Battle Creek with Dr. Yvonne Kennedy, National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Jean Noble, National Chairwoman of the Project Cherish in attendance.

  • In June 2004, we dedicated a headstone to the first African American resident of the city of Battle Creek, Lewis Jackson.

  • Delta's work in prevention and wellness translates to health education programs and health fairs. We have hosted annual HIV/AIDS Awareness projects along with other local organizations. We have also held cooking demonstrations hosted diabetes information tables at local churches and health fairs.

  • Knowing the importance and need for an informed electorate we have focused on voter registration and voter education programs. We hold "Delta Day" activities with local elected officials and partner on community initiatives where appropriate.

Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It's important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It's the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.
